28.11.26 MELBOURNE - Photography as Reconstruction: A Weekend Workshop with Diana Markosian

Leica Akademie Australia is pleased to announce an exclusive weekend workshop with Armenian-American photographer Diana Markosian, considered one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary documentary photography.

Photography as Reconstruction is an intimate weekend mentorship designed to help photographers and visual artists reconnect with their creative practice, develop a clearer artistic vision, and build the confidence to pursue work that feels deeply personal and authentic.

Over the course of the weekend, participants will take part in an in-depth portfolio review, constructive group critiques, and individual mentorship sessions, alongside conversations on concept development, sequencing, editing, and building long-term photographic projects. Diana will also lead a live portraiture session, demonstrating her approach to directing and working with a model, before guiding participants through their own shooting component. We'll explore not only how images are made, but why we make them, examining photography as a tool for memory, identity, reconstruction, and personal inquiry.
The mentorship will also address the realities of sustaining a creative practice: navigating self-doubt, developing a consistent body of work, approaching exhibitions and publications, and finding meaningful ways to share your work with others.

Diana Markosian is a contemporary artist working between Paris and New York. Spanning photography, filmmaking, and installation, her practice is recognised for its deeply personal approach to storytelling, blending documentary realism with constructed narratives and archival material. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, the National Portrait Gallery, Foam Amsterdam, and the Museum of Modern Art. In 2025, she received the Madame Figaro Prize at the Rencontres d'Arles for her exhibition Father. Markosian is the author of three monographs.
