Meeting Our Exceptional Instructors: Leaders in Photography.

Jesse Marlow

Jesse Marlow is based in Melbourne, Australia. His works are held in public and private collections across Australia and the world. In 2003, he published his first book of photographs: Centre Bounce: Football from Australia’s Heart, (Hardie Grant Books). In 2005 he published a book of street photographs titled Wounded, (Sling Shot Press). In 2006 he was selected to participate in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. In 2011, he was awarded the International Street Photographer of the Year Award. In 2012, Marlow won the MGA – Bowness Prize. In 2014, Marlow released his third monograph Don’t Just Tell Them, Show Them. In 2021, Marlow published his 4th monograph Second City (Sling Shot Press). Over the last ten years, Marlow’s street photos have been profiled in a number of books and exhibitions around the world including Street Photography Now, Masters Of Street Photography and The World Atlas of Street Photography.

Nick Rains

Nick Rains brings forty years of broad experience as a professional photographer to his role as an Akademie Instructor, and he remains a working photographer, shooting travel/documentary assignments all over the world.

In 2002 Nick was awarded Australian Geographic Magazine’s Photographer of the Year. In 2014 Nick was named Travel Photographer of the year by the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers, an industry body which also recognised him as a Master of Photography.

Post-production is another of Nick’s specialities, he is an acknowledged Photoshop and Lightroom expert and has been involved in teaching advanced courses in these two industry leading applications for the past 15 years. Nick is also an ILFORD Master Printer, making fine prints for all the Leica exhibitions within Australia and often takes on consulting roles with inkjet manufacturers.

Nick also acts as an external consultant with Leica Camera AG, particularly in the role of field tester for upcoming products.

Robin Lowe

Robin Lowe is a photographer and artist based in Melbourne. As a student, he studied under the seminal Australian photographer Carol Jerrems, after which he pursued a career and artistic practice in photography. He developed a diverse portfolio of work that included advertising, portraiture, lifestyle and architectural assignments as he continued to refine his experiments with black and white and colour darkroom techniques. Robin's vision is eclectic and responsive to light and form. He travels frequently and allows his interest in art, architecture, and alternative processes to guide his artistic projects across digital and film mediums.

Robin's editorial assignments have been published in print across books and magazines. In addition, his artwork is held in private collections internationally. In 2019, he won the coveted Lorenzo IL Magnifico award at The Florence International Biennale of Contemporary Art and Design.

Bill Green

Sydney based Bill Green’s long career has been made up of photographing for the music industry, celebrity portraiture for magazines and PR clients, film and TV Stills, corporate and personal work. 

In addition to this Bill has taught Photography extensively at the renowned Australian Centre for Photography and now runs workshops for Leica-Akademie Australia. Bill was in house photographer for Sony Music Entertainment for seven years and worked on the ARIA’s, Australia’s premier music awards for ten years. 

Bill’s photograph’s have been published in Rolling Stone, NME, Elle, Vogue, New Woman, Follow Me Gentleman, Who Weekly to name but a few as well as most major newspapers. Bill’s personal work has been exhibited in Sydney, London and L.A.

Knox Bertie

Knox Bertie is a photographer, living and working in Sydney. Knox’s work focuses on the relationship between people and the urban environment. Often a study of light and dark and mostly in black and white, his work presents a look into the day-to-day lives of his fellow Sydneysiders as they find quiet moments of self-reflection during their daily routine. Knox has described his photography as a way of staying awake and seeing the world around him. His photos are often as much a self-reflection of the way he sees the world around them, as they are a document of reality.

Knox was chosen as the Launch Ambassador for the Leica Q2 Monochrom. He is currently running workshops for Leica Akademie Australia.

Russell Shakespeare

A Portrait/Documentary photographer working in digital and analogue, Russell specialises in Editorial Magazine assignments. “I love telling peoples stories and, in particular, working on long term projects.”

Based on the Gold Coast, Russell’s work has been published in national magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, Qantas Magazine, Gourmet Traveller, The Deal, Q Weekend, The Good Weekend, Time, Australian Traveller, Financial Review and The Weekend Australian magazine, the Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and in books by, among others, The Magnum Foundation, Australian Geographic, The Museum of Brisbane and The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.
He is a four-time Finalist in The Moran Contemporary Photographic prize (2007-2014), Black and White Photographer of the Year (Documentary, Finalist, 2015), twice Finalist in the National Photographic portrait prize (2020 and 2011), Olive Cotton Exhibition (six times Finalist, 2006- 2021) and Walkley Award for Journalism (best news photograph, 1995). His works can also be found exhibited at The Queensland Art Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery.

Russell Shakespeare

Stephen Dupont

An award-winning Australian photographer and artist, Stephen Dupont has been recognised around the world for his portrayal of the human condition, war and the climate crisis through photography. His work has earned him dozens of prizes including the W. Eugene Smith Grant, Robert Gardner Fellowship from Harvard University, a Robert Capa Gold Medal Citation, the Olivier Rebbot and several World Press Photo Awards.

He has twice been an Official War Artist (Afghanistan and Solomon Islands) for the Australian War Memorial and is a co-founder and past director of the Australian based ‘Reportage Festival of Documentary Photography’.

When not on assignment, Stephen enjoys exploring new and innovative ways of making art and statements from his projects – often collaborating with other artists, writers and creatives through books, exhibitions, film and theatre (Gerhard Steidl, Jacques Menasche, David Field, Tim Page).

Kristian Dowling

As a world-class celebrity-entertainment photographer, Kristian Dowling has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. From music video and TV productions, to global events including the Beijing Olympic Games, Cannes Film Festival, New York Fashion Week, MTV Music/Movie Awards and on tour with Katy Perry, Kristian has earned a reputation for being a creator that can deliver head-turning results – no matter the situation.

Having spent a career producing compelling work for countless international brands, Kristian now works as an independent consultant helping brands with strategic content creation as a director and producer with photography and video productions.
