Black and White photography is considered one of the higher forms of photography – by eliminating colour you open your eyes to form, tone and texture.
For some it is a matter of turning on the B+W mode on your camera – but for those who want to explore the detail of this method, and add a level of refinement, we propose the Monochrome Weekend workshop with Australian Leica Akademie Instructor Nick Rains.
Over two full days we will further unpack this method, covering the fundamental basics of B+W photography before further exploring the subtleties and detail involved in the monochrome process.
Day One: Initial meeting and discuss around the whole B+W concept – from here we will head out into the backstreets and alleys of Sydney’s CBD to put the concepts into practice and to shoot some images to work with the following day.
Day Two: Using the images shot on Day One, we will examine the whole colour (raw) to B+W conversion process in great detail (in Lightroom and Photoshop), while Nick Rains will share with you his personal methods for the finest creative control possible. The second half of the workshop will have Nick take you through the process of how to make richly tonal B+W prints, using the best printers available, the Epson 3880 and P800 printers, and using ILFORD Gallerie papers including Nick’s favourites – Gold Fibre Gloss and Smooth Textured Cotton.
