No matter what aperture or lens you use, you really must make sure that eyes are perfectly in focus. Of all the ‘attractors’ in a photo, such as bright areas, contrasty areas etc, none are as compelling at the human figure, and in particular, human eyes. We are hard-wired to look at eyes, we can’t help it, and if those eyes that we are so strongly attracted to are out of focus then that causes a big disconnect in our enjoyment of the image. The eyes have it.

In this image above, try to be conscious of where your own eyes are looking and I think you’ll agree that it’s really hard to look away from this Indian gentleman’s piercing eyes. Your own focus/attention point will keep coming back to those eyes again and again – you just can’t help it.

So, if you are shooting portraits, make sure those eyes are crisp!
