Nick Rains recently took a small group of keen photographers to Cuba which, as you might imagine, is a superb location for any kind of photography, particularly street and culture. Here’s a gallery of images from that trip which shows what we photographed as well as some of our group in action!

Our most recent Akademie trip was to Greece (Milos, Athens and Meteora) followed by an extension to Wetzar to see the Leica factory and stay in the new Ernst Leitz Hotel. We were astonishingly lucky with the weather because Athens had torrential rain just after we left and in Meteora we had clouds instead of the forecast blue skies (which Nick detests!).

Akademie Instructor Nick Rains was recently commissioned to shoot a series of aerial photographs of a cruise ship coming into Sydney harbour. Having a helicopter handy on a perfect day is not something that happens very often so Nick took the opportunity to shoot some personal images whilst waiting for the ship to dock. Nick has just started working with the Leica SL so this was a good opportunity to put the camera through its paces in a challenging environment – doors-off, 500 feet over Sydney.
“I found the SL to be perfect for this kind of work. It’s light and responsive so I can concentrate on the shot, and a major bonus of the 24-90 lens is the built-in stabiliser which gave me images as sharp as though I had shot on a tripod”.

Tony McDonough demonstrated how to use available light to shoot portraits at the Akademie event in Perth on June 29th. Here are a few images from the day, which as you can see was very well attended.
Unless otherwise noted, photos all shot by Nick Rains on the Leica T (at ISO3200).

A medium format digital camera might not be the first thing you’d pack if you were heading off to the deep forests and wild coastlines of Papua New Guinea but Nick Rains, Leica Akademie Principal Instructor, chose the S-System to document a trip to this remote part of the world.
The Leica Blog ran a story on his experiences of using this camera in difficult circumstances; you can read the entire story here:
